Tobin withdraws RI hospitals from CHA

Published: April 29, 2010

Providence RI Bishop Thomas Tobin has withdrawn two hospitals from membership of the Catholic Health Association following the organization's backing for the recently passed health care reform bill.

CHA head Sr Carol Keehan met with President Barack Obama at the White House days before the bill passed. The bill was signed into law March 23, AP reports.

The diocese on Wednesday released a letter written March 29 by Bishop Thomas Tobin to Keehan in which he complained that even an association with the group was embarrassing.

"Your enthusiastic support of the legislation, in contradiction of the bishops of the United States, provided an excuse for members of Congress, misled the public and caused a serious scandal for many members of the church," Tobin wrote.

Keehan said in an interview Wednesday that she replied to Bishop Tobin that the group would honor his request.

She noted that very few Catholic hospitals are sponsored by dioceses, and that while she had great regard for St. Joseph, it is a small hospital group.

She said she believed groups on the far right were using the issue of abortion funding as a way to kill health care reform, and that the language, while not the way she would have written it, does not allow federal funding of abortions.

"It certainly does the job," she said.

  1. Because of the health care reform the poor will have access to health care what can be more conforming to the Gospel of Jesus Christ than that.
Tobin is acting like a little kid who is taking his marbles and going home because he lost a few points in the game. Or wait a minute, he is acting like a guy who really wants a red hat.
In any case, he ought to read the Gospel and be open to the health care reform while working to change what he finds objective.
We deserve better in leadership than men with little boys mentalities.

  2. Another Bishop screaming for a red dress. It's proof that this group of bishops no longer deserves our money or respect.

  3. The more "serious scandal" is the dictatorial, arrogant behavior of our bishops. "Think what we think, say what we say" or you'll getr it. Yes, we will use all of our power to get you."!!!!

Don 't they realize that their arrogance, dictatorial stances and can we say, adolescent decisions and actions are the scandal to the people.

  4. Even the bishops are not all on the same side of the fence when it comes to health care. Just today our episcopal moderator for a national organization talked about the importance of reading and praying with this new healthcare. He pointed out to us how it more follows the Gospel than not, and how some of his brother bishops (a minority, but loud few) are still either blind or just downright racist! I'm just happy that my own bishop back home supports the Obama-proposed healthcare plan. The sisters' faithfulness to the Gospel are a threat to some bishops!

  6. I think this is appropriate because there is no lawfully enacted prohibition against using taxpayer money to kill the unborn. A presidential executive order does not carry the same force of law.

Besides, the president owes his election to the millions of dollars given by the abortion industry. I cannot believe for one minute that our government and the Dept. of HHS will not find a legal way to express its gratitude for this support by facilitating the sending to the unborn killing industry more business.
