Can't call yourself and support contraception: Listecki tells youth

Published: December 18, 2009

Responding to a campaign by "Young Catholics for Choice", incoming Milwaukee Archbishop Jerome Listecki has said that no-one "can disregard Church teaching regarding contraception, abortion and human sexuality in general and remain Catholic in good standing".

Using media advertising the group is, says the Archbishop-Designate, "attempting to convey the message that Catholics can disregard Church teaching regarding contraception, abortion and human sexuality in general and remain Catholics in good standing," Lifesite News reports.

However, "nothing could be further from the truth," Archbishop Listecki said.

"While people can call themselves whatever they want, it is my duty as a bishop to state clearly and unequivocally that by professing and disseminating views in grave contradiction to Catholic teaching, members of organizations like 'Young Catholics for Choice' in fact disown their Catholic heritage, tragically distancing themselves from that communion with the Church to which they are called," added the archbishop.

YCFC calls on Catholics to use an "informed conscience" to decide to use birth control and the morning-after-pill, also called "emergency contraception."

Their ad campaign states: "Young Catholics are having sex. We are using contraception and condoms. We are having abortions. We are bisexual, gay, lesbian, straight and transgender. And none of this makes us any less Catholic than conservative Catholics who speak out against us.

"The truth is, they don't represent what the majority of Catholics - especially those of us in our 20s and 30s - think about sex. It comes down to Catholic teaching on conscience. Basically, every individual has the right and responsibility to follow his or her own conscience - and respect others' right to do the same. With conscience and respect, good Catholic sex is not only possible, it's already happening. "

The group, claiming to be a youth wing of "Catholics for Choice," admits that it's mandate is to "take action to counter the bishops' impact both in the United States and around the world. "

Archbishop Listecki concluded his statement calling for prayers for the YCFC members. "We pray that they may reconcile their position which is contrary to the Catholic Faith they claim to profess."

  1. Wow, has the Archbishop considered that if only Catholics who define themselves as Catholics according to him, support the church, there will be a lot less in the collections and money given to the Bishops Appeal?

  2. What I find interesting is that nowhere in the Gospels does Jesus mention any of these, contraception, abortion and human sexuality, except of course when he forgave and protected the woman caught in adultary. But now Bishops absolutize their ideas about morality and use them to kick people out of the church. "To hell with you" is there only approach to some complex complicated issues.wisdom regarding these matters

  3. Yet another ridiculous attempt at imposing a single-issue agenda on Catholics.

First, there are Catholics for Choice -- not for abortion, contraception, or any specific practice. Choice is part of making decisions based on one's faith and existential situation.

Second, even Catholics who wouldn't choose specific practices for themselves recognize the need to honor the decisions of non-Catholics in a pluralistic society.

The archbishop's plan would reinforce efforts to create a monolithically extremist religious body. Do you really want to join right-wing fundamentalist/evangelicals in obstructing attempts at creating social justice and tolerance?

  4. great job Bishop!

speaking out as a bishop should will bring small minded condemnations, but think of your brother bishops who are in prison for proclaiming the TRUTH of faith.

may the Lord continue to bless us with strong teachers of the truth.

may the sheep of the Lord's flock follow the countenance of those to whom the Lord has entrusted the Church. otherwise sheep will not safely graze.....

as to some of the previous posts: so far off base......
    how sad

  5. It is actually refreshing to see the link between abortion and contaception as it more fully represents the church's rationale on "human sexualtiy in general." As all good Catholics know there can be no real "choice" in the matter of human sexuality because sex has a telos sanctioned by God and not human desire. In fact, human desire in sex gets in the way of God's law. Take falling in love, for example, it just drives humans batty. Or try to develop a mature sexually desirable relationship with a partner - wrong, wrong, wrong. Once the church successfully thwarts all (deviant) sexual desire, sex will be a sterile and succinct act, clean as new snow. The archbishop only wants to help Catholics keep their feelings to themselves and follow church teaching. What's wrong with that? That way, we can keep sex in the closet and continue down the blissful path of ingorance and shame.

  6. This group sounds arrogant, egotistical, and incredibly cavalier (ie, their comment on abortions). The bishop is doing exactly what he is supposed to: sheparding his flock. If that means reprimanding and correcting a group of glib, know-it-alls (who think they know better than the most learned scholars of church teaching on these issues) and hence risking less collection money, Tony, then so be it. Good work, bishop, and God bless you for standing up to preach the truth against those who advocate for tolerance, but ironically are intolerant themselves of the ideals and virtues that the Church professes.

  7. Bishop Molinaro: "In fact, Catholic hospitals have always provided emergency contraception when this was appropriate, . . . . "

letter to the Wisconsin legislature 12-17-07

  8. Lon Newman: Bp Molinaro used the word "contraception" because that is what secular legislators use for the practice of subsequently to the act preventing conception by a woman who has been raped. This is not actually contraception.

  9. Ronk...I read your response there, and thank you for that, but sadly I was unable to understand it. Could you further explain that for me?

I am unsure as to how or when contraception stops being contraception, or that entire distinction.

    Thank you Ronk.
