Pope Benedict has named Fr William F. Medley, 57, pastor of St Bernadette Parish, Louisville, as bishop of Owensboro, Kentucky, succeeding Bishop John J. McRaith, 75, who resigned last January.
The appointment was publicized in Washington, December 15, by Archbishop Pietro Sambi, apostolic nuncio to the United States, the USCCB announces.
William F. Medley was born September 17, 1952, in Loretto, Kentucky. He attended Bellarmine College, Louisville, and St. Meinrad School of Theology, St. Meinrad, Indiana.
Bishop-elect Medley was ordained a priest for the Louisville Archdiocese in 1982.
Assignments after ordination included associate pastor, St. Pius X Parish, Louisville, 1982-1985; chaplain, Assumption High School, Louisville, 1983-1985; associate pastor, Cathedral of the Assumption, Louisville, 1985-1988; administrator, St. Charles Borromeo Parish, Holy Cross Parish and St. Benedict Parish, Louisville, 1989-1990; director, Office of Clergy Personnel, 1989-1990; pastor, St. Martin De Porres Parish, Bardstown, Kentucky, 1990-1993; pastor, St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral, and administrator, St. Monica Parish, Bardstown, 1993-1996; pastor, Mother of Good Counsel Parish, Louisville, 2005-2008; and pastor, St. Bernadette Parish, Louisville, 2008 to present.
Bishop McRaith was ordained a priest for the Diocese of New Ulm, Minnesota, in 1960. He was named bishop of Owensboro in 1982. After becoming a bishop he led the drafting of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops' 1992 pastoral letter, "Stewardship: A Disciple's Response."
The Owensboro Diocese includes 32 counties in Western Kentucky and 12,502 square miles. It has a population of 865,416 people, with 49,909, or six percent, of them Catholic.
