Visitator Millea strikes out series of visitation questions

Published: November 12, 2009

Apostolic Visitator Mother Mary Clare Millea has agreed to drop a number of controversial questions to which she had sought answers as part of the inquiry into female religious congregations.

Information no longer being requested as part of the Vatican Apostolic Visitation, which began last January, includes the properties owned by the congregations, their most recent financial audits, ages of the sisters, and the ministries they are involved in, NCR Online reports.

Millea explained in a November 5 letter why she had dropped the request for the information.

"Many major superiors have already addressed concerns to the Apostolic Visitation Office regarding confidentiality and protection of privileged information about their congregation, the sisters themselves and their apostolate," Mother Millea wrote.

"Although our canonical and civil advisors concur that the Apostolic See has the right to all the information contained in the questionnaire, in response to your legitimate questions, I have determined that documents number 5, 6, 7, requested in Part C of the questionnaire, are not to be submitted to the Apostolic Visitation Office as part of this visitation."

She added that her office will return to congregation heads information already gathered regarding these subject matters.

"This change in design of the questionnaire," Millea wrote, "was made after listening to your concerns and after considerable prayer and counsel."

  1. why are religious orders afraid of exposing financial statements to vatican? perhaps because the vow of poverty is not legitimate in these or many of these orders? what kind of a report is that with vital info being removed? trying to hide and disregard facts is obviously a sign of guilt.

  2. The best decision would be to end the Visitation (really an Inquisition)! If the rumor is true that some US bishops requested the investigation in order to get their hands on the financial assets of women's congregations in order pay off the sexual abuse settlements, the less they know the better. And these bishops don't understand that it is difficult to suppress a religious congregation, which is the only way they could get the assets.

  3. The Vatican ought to just drop the whole witch hunt thing. Let the orders run and maintain themselves those that are of the Spirit will flourish. This is America, the women religious are adults, treat them as such and allow them to be who they are in freedom and in love.

  4. Everyone shouts Freedom from Authority....we don't need men...female priest now! Wow, what a church, what a world. Mother has a Mandatum...let her do her job. There are Sisters and Nuns who wish to comply but are afraid to go against community leadership. You must honestly reflect..do Sisters like Donna Quinn do good or harm their communities. In order to see if the church (worldwide) teaches the magisterium, it is important to open the windows and get better air circulating through "all channels" of communication.
Believe it or not, some communities worship God as a Woman!

  5. First of all let us all be open... so the first question which needs to be answered before anything else. Will those who made the initial request to the Vatican please stand up , name yourselves and give your reasons.....
Then ascertain from the faithful if the majority are in agreement.... I suspect not... but I would not wish to prejudge.....

  6. Yes, the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity upon becoming human was male .

However, in the Godhead there is no gender. All those masculine pronouns used down through the ages are just plain incorrect.

By referring to the Lord as " she " we can more clearly see how absurd calling God " he " truly is.
