'Disconcerted' Kennedy hits back

Published: November 11, 2009

Rhode Island Rep. Patrick Kennedy has described comments by Providence Bishop Thomas Tobin questioning his faith because of his stance on abortion and health care reform as "very disconcerting."

Kennedy made his comments after Bishop Tobin indefinitely postponed a planned Thursday meeting.

He said that the bishop had not kept an agreement not to debate the issue in public in terms of his personal faith.

  1. If the bishop is the chief teacher in his diocese then it would seem he has every right to challenge a member of his diocese on living the teachings of the Church.
There is no doubt on what the Church teaches about abortion and the sactity of Human Life. The teaching is nothing new, some of its oldest documents, like the Dideche shows its consistent teaching on life. Even the liturgy and liturgical calander of the Church shows its teaching of life beginning from the moment of conception. Witness the feast of the Annunciation and the feast of the Immaculate Conception.
It would seem, from public statements, that Kennedy doesn't hold the same understanding as the Church, if that is true it is perfectly within the scope of the bishop to discuss this matter with a member of his diocese.

  2. The bad old days of the poor and tired excuses of Uncle Ted are over Mr. Congressman. The reality is that through your comments and actions you the majority of your family members have excommunicated yourselves from the rest of the Catholic Church. You may not want to hear it but it is the truth. I'll continue to pray for you and your family.

  3. Providence Bishop Thomas Tobin has the duty to confront the heresy of a public official in his diocese who claims to be a Catholic. Were the good bishop to lack the courage to debate life and death issues in public, he would be shirking his responsibility as chief shepherd and teacher of his flock.

Of course Kennedy would be troubled and respond with silly diversionary tripe. He's a politician and politicians want to be elected. Being rightly called on the carpet for his irresponsibility and grave public scandal doesn’t enhance the case for his future political aspirations.

  4. Mr. Kennedy -- what is there to debate ? Your beliefs are not in acciordance wuth the Catholic Faith -- Bone up to it.

  5. Until we, as Catholic Christians, understand that we have no right to take any life... from conception until natural death... these 'debates' over abortion amount to divisive rhetoric as well as the continued promulgation of patriarchy and exclusion.
