Marquette diocese bans Gumbleton

Published: October 13, 2009

Marquette Bishop Alexander Sample has asked Detroit Emeritus Auxiliary Bishop Thomas Gumbleton not to speak at an event organized by Marquette Citizens for Peace and Justice owing to his positions on homosexuality and female ordination.

Bishop Gumbleton was invited by the Marquette Citizens for Peace and Justice to speak on how the Bible calls for peace and on the abolition of nuclear weapons, the Detroit News reports.

According to a written statement from Bishop Sample, Bishop Gumbleton failed to inform the Marquette Diocese of his planned trip to the area.

In a statement, Bishop Sample said Bishop Gumbleton's position on homosexuality and ordaining women into the priesthood were reasons he asked the Bishop not to come.

"This has nothing to do with the organization that invited Bishop Gumbleton, the Marquette Citizens for Peace and Justice," said Fr Ronald Browne of the Marquette Diocese. "

"This has nothing to do with them. We appreciate their efforts, and naturally the Catholic Church has a long stand in favor of peace and justice."

Event organizers from the Marquette Citizens for Peace and Justice say they were surprised and disappointed with the Bishop's decision because it was last minute and forced them to cancel their monthly event

  1. Peter and Paul differed over converts keeping the kosher laws and men having to be circumcised before the council of Jerusalem. Do you think one forbade the other from speaking anywhere?

  2. I am sorry for the Catholic community of Marquette. Bishop Gumbleton is a kind soul and a courageous Catholic leader.

  3. Now bishops are banning one another? How embarrassing! Their behavior lately is unbelievable. You'd think they'd want to regain some credibility after several years of irrelevance.

  4. Why are so many bishops afraid of an open dialogue? Are they so unsure of their position(s) that they cannot be opened for scrutiny and critique?

  5. Perhaps Bishop Sample would also ban Pope Benedict XVI. ...better yet, all bishops should ban Bp Sample - peiod! How judging, non-Christian, unloving and very NOT Catholic these bishops are so PUBLICLY acting - and now even towards each other!

  6. I meet Bishop Gumbleton 6 years ago, He is such a caring man. He lives from his heart, which I think is what our world is missing. I would love to be blessed with another hour car ride from the airport with him. They don't know what they are missing.. Peace

  7. These bishops will never get it. The church might have a long history of peace and justice issues but they refuse to practice them in the church. Apparently they think it should only be practiced every place except in the church. WAKE UP!!

  8. This should come as no surprise to thinking, faithful Catholics who understand the nature of the one, holy, Catholic and apostolic church. Bishop Gumbleton may be a very fine, delightful person, but decades ago he separated himself from the Catholic Church by his dissent from important elements of the Faith and by espousing heretical notions.

A respectable university claiming to be authentically Catholic does not host a speaker notoriously known to hold views that undermine and oppose Magisterial teachings it accepts.

This is a no-brainer. Unfortunately, there are dozens of alleged "Catholic" universities in the U.S. that would joyfully welcome such a subversive interloper. Notre Dame shamelessly did it “in your face” last May 2009.

  9. Jim Connolly, FYI:
First of all, Notre Dame welcomed a non-Catholic-practicing president to the university, who is pro-choice. (Obama has NEVER claimed to be Catholic, nor has he pretended to follow Catholic Teaching.) Other (non-Catholic) so-called 'prolife' presidents have been invited to Catholic Universities. Anti-abortion, by the way does NOT equal prolife. War, capital punishment, racism, lack of respect and dignity toward any human ALL go against PROLIFE (but if you truly know and understand all of your Catholic Teachings, you already should know this) - yet why is ND singled out?
Secondly, if Bishop Gumbleton has undermined magisterial teaching (as you say), he would have been excommunicated by the pope - of which he has not! ...do you must have better knowledge and/or formation and a place or position to make such judgment on a person who is indeed a part of that Magisterial position you claim to be faithful to? (Whether you like it or not, Bishop Gumbleton IS a part of the magisterium!)
Thirdly, Bishop Gumbleton NEVER separated himself from the Catholic Church – perhaps you (among others) instead chose to separate yourself from some Catholic teachings that challenge you to live the Gospel!
