New York Catholic nurse forced to assist abortion

Published: July 23, 2009

New York Catholic nurse, Catherina Cenzon-DeCarlo, is taking legal action against her employer Mt Sinai Hospital for forcing her to assist with a late-term abortion.

Hospital officials demanded that Catherina Cenzon-DeCarlo help with the termination of a 22-week pregnancy despite having been aware of her religious objection to abortion since 2004, The Christian Institute reports.

When she tried to remind staff at Mount Sinai Hospital of her beliefs she was threatened with the sack, she says.

Mrs Cenzon-DeCarlo had to witness the whole procedure and take the aborted foetus to the specimen room. She says the experience has caused her emotional and psychological trauma.

The nurse's lawyers say it is illegal in the United States for publicly-funded employers to force staff to act against their religious beliefs.

They say that the procedure was not an immediate emergency and there was "plenty of time" to find a different nurse to assist.

The Alliance Defense Fund (ADF), an American organisation working to defend religious freedoms, has filed a lawsuit against the hospital on Mrs Cenzon-DeCarlo's behalf.

Hospital administrators told the nurse that the scheduled abortion was an "emergency," though evidence shows otherwise, and insisted moments before the procedure that she assist doctors despite her repeated objections to the procedure, which dismembered a preborn child in the 22nd week of gestation, an article on the ADF website says.

By federal law, hospitals that receive federal funds cannot force employees to participate in abortion procedures under any circumstances.

ADF Legal Counsel Matt Bowman said: "Chasing away workers from the health care field is disastrous health care policy".

"An individual's conscience is likely what brought them to the healthcare field. Denying or coercing their conscience will likely drive them right out."

  1. This happens more often than we are aware of. I am a retired nurse and have been where Ms Cenzon-DeCarlo is although it was 1975 I am still very troubled and it is on my mind daily. I left that hospital. At that time it was required by the nursing school that I attended to "OBSERVE" a saline abortion and being as dumb as I was I said nothing but when I got a job I made it known I would not participate so they would assign you to take care of the mother until the baby aborted. On one occasion I was even asked to just put a baby in the utility room to die because it was born alive which would be a liability to the hospital and doctor which performed the abortion. Just couldn't work under those circumstances! Hang in there Catherina.

  2. What kind of nasty, vindictive and ignorant supervisor would insist that you participate in something that is morally repulsive and reprehensible (and knowing you feel that way)?

A very expensive lesson for Mt. Sinai, as I suspect Ms. Cenzon-DeCarlo will need counseling for a very long time, in addition to lost income from the possibilty that she may not be able to work in her field again.

  3. This situation reminds me of what the Church faced in the first three centuries of its existence. Christians were up against the pagan Roman Empire and were forced to worship the Emperor along with the other gods of the Empire. Those Christians who refused to capitulate were jailed, beaten, exiled, or killed, often in hideous fashion even by the pagan Romans' own standards.

We are now living in the midst of a new, modern Paganism, one that is just as hostile to the God of Heaven and as relentless as the ancient Romans. We must keep Jesus' words always before us: "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven ..." (Matt. 5:10-12) and "Father, forgive them for they don't know what they are doing" (Lk 23:34).

  4. People who are put in this situation should have the right to walk out and know they have just cause. I wish Catherina had done this - walked out - then brought about a lawsuit, but how many of us can make that choice when we have a family depending on us for income?
We need to advocate for health care professionals and their consciences - NOW!

  5. Nurse Cenzon-Decarlo deserves the support and prayers of all people who respect life. The barbarity of partial birth abortion is clearly illustrated on numerous websites, anatomy books and videotapes.

These pictures are the real thing and do not lie. The so called health care professionals who pressured and lied to Ms. Cenzon-DeCarlo do not deserve to work in a hospital, where the supposition is that they are dedicated to providing medical services to patients. It is repugnant that hospital staff would threaten a professional nurse with patient abandonment, because of her refusal to participate in an abortion. The Board of Health, professional nursing organizations, JACHO, unions, and every other hospital and medical regulatory organization should investigate and provide corrective discipline to Mt. Sinai Hospital and the individuals involved in this trajedy.
