USCCB in solidarity with D'Arcy over Notre Dame

Published: June 23, 2009

At their spring General Assembly last week, USCCB bishops issued a statement of solidarity with Fort Wayne-South Bend Bishop John M. D'Arcy in the wake of the controversy over the University of Notre Dame's bestowal of an honorary doctorate on President Obama.

The bishops made this show of support during executive session, a USCCB statement says.

The bishops later released the following statement:

The bishops of the United States express our appreciation and support for our brother bishop, the Most Reverend John D'Arcy. We affirm his pastoral concern for Notre Dame University, his solicitude for its Catholic identity, and his loving care for all those the Lord has given him to sanctify, to teach and to shepherd.

  1. I would expect nothing less from the USCCB than resounding support for Bishop D'Arcy in whose diocese this nauseating and disgusting circus took place in May. Bishop D'Arcy did the right thing and this should be commended.

Notre Dame will never be the same because of its shameful action that it tried to smooth over into a slobbering love fest where everyone showed their elation in the intoxication of being truly out of touch with reality. They all unwittingly relished the gross affront to the Catholic Faith the President of the United States, with unconstrained glee, brought to its campus.

  2. I do agree with Mr. Connolly that I, too, 'would expect nothing less from the USCCB' in their appreciation of and support for Bishop D'Arcy. However, Mr. Connolly needs to take note that the USCCB did not explicity 'condemn' nor 'reprimand' Notre Dame. And, much to the credit of the USCCB, they did not employ any malicious rhetoric with regard to the 'action' as did Mr. Connolly in his comments.

  3. The day we can't "come together and reason together" is a sad day, indeed. I am totally against abortion but realize that others have a different opinion and I am willing to hear there side. God help us all when this country abrogates the freedom of speech and the ability to speak our minds openly and fearlessly. The Mullahs in Iran are showing clearly the alternative. God help us all.

  4. The bishops statement in support of Bishop D'Arcy lacks conviction and force, as is true of most everything the bishops have to say as a group.
