Financial crisis causes Puerto Rico schools to close

Published: December 10, 2008

Puerto RicoCatholic officials plan to shut six of the 130 church schools in San Jose, Puerto Rico next year partly because of the global financial crisis, Archbishop Roberto Gonzalez Nieves says.

Archbishop Gonzalez Nieves says 1,337 students and 165 teachers and staff will be affected by the July 1 closures. He says they are made necessary by the credit crunch and demographic changes in the districts.

The archbishop said Tuesday that students will be able to register at other Catholic schools.

Church attorney Samuel Soto said up to 90 percent of the teachers and staff affected will be able to work in other schools if the students remain in the archdiocese's system.
