SF prelate jokes about DUI charge at installation

San Francisco’s new Roman Catholic archbishop made self-deprecating jokes about his recent drunken-driving arrest during his formal installation ceremony, which came just days after he pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of reckless driving.

But Archbishop Salvatore Joseph Cordileone, a strong supporter of California’s ban on same-sex marriage, did not refer to the distress his appointment has aroused in this gay-friendly city and mentioned marriage only obliquely Thursday.

Amid heavy security and the splendor of his faith’s most sacred rites, Cordileone told an audience of more than 2,000 invited guests at St. Mary’s Cathedral he was grateful for the support he had received from people of different religious and political viewpoints following the Aug. 25 arrest in his home town of San Diego.

“I know in my life God has always had a way of putting me in my place. I would say, though, that in the latest episode of my life God has outdone himself,” Cordileone said with a chuckle as he delivered his first homily as archbishop.

The 56-year-old priest, the second-youngest U.S. archbishop, went on to say he did not know “if it’s theologically correct to say God has a way of making himself known in this way,” and asked for the indulgence of other high-ranking church leaders in the audience.

Cordileone had been scheduled to appear in court on a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence next Tuesday. Court records show he pleaded guilty on Monday to a reduced charge of reckless driving, an option frequently given to first-time DUI offenders, said Gina Coburn, a spokeswoman for the San Diego City Attorney.

The standard sentence for reckless driving is three years’ probation and a $1,120 fine, Coburn said. [More]

Catholic Lady, the church is made up of adult men and women. We should not tolerate anything but a person with the best of judgement and morals in a religious leader. Haven’t we had enough of poor bishops? Haven’t we had enough scandal. We don’t need a man who got arrested for drunk driving and then joking abot it before his appearance before the judge. This drunk is not fit to be bishop.

    Boy, the queers are dismayed.

    • Tony says:

Roy, what a horrible thing to say on this blog. Our Catholic religion teches us that thar all people are to be treated equally a
      With respect and love.
Some of the readers on here are no doubt homosexuals some others may have family members, sons and daughters and the don’t need to be bashed by you. Please apologize for your extream lay offensive remark.

    • Concerned says:

Roy – you are obviously dismayed by the message of Jesus!

  3. Judith says:

I agree with “concerned’s” comment – How can one responsible for others as shepherd, not be responsible for his own behavior- God didn’t do it – apparently you did – wake up how can you ask others to be responsible for their actions when you choose not to be responsibile for yours? Really? Bishop? Really?

  4. Concerned says:

He should be ashamed of setting such a bad example – not joking about it during his installation. He seems to have dismissed it as nothing but something God did in order to get his attention. What?????????? Whay can’t a Bishop say – WHAT I DID WAS WRONG. I DID SOMETHING I AM ASHAMED OF. THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR IT – I AM TRULY SORRY AND ASK FOR FORGIVENESS? They just might find out that people will be forgiving – demonstrating much more forgivness than the Bishops have demonstarted to others.

  5. Florian says:

The archbishop will be on probation in his DUI case for the next three years, meaning that a violation could reinstate the original charges and result in stiffer (no pun intended) punishment.

His church job is another matter. Here he’ll be on probation for the next 500 years as his church continues to fight gay rights and demean gays as “intrinsically disordered” persons. The result likely will be a sharp decline in the fortunes of the church.

  6. Tony says:

    Not a divide.

  7. Tony says:

Nothing good will come of this appointment of Cordileone what is needed in the area is a healer and a divider.a guy who can joke about sdrunken driving spits in the face of the law and the people whom he serves. Shame on Corddlileone.

    • Catholic Lady says:

Only God knows the plans he has for us and for the new archibishop. A study of the Saints of the Church will reveal that some of them had a very checkered past. Tony, why not leave the judging of others to Our Father in Heaven, who judges not only our actions but our motives and our hearts.
