Ohio Catholic college keeps contraception coverage
A Catholic college that drew criticism when it announced plans to halt birth-control insurance coverage is still offering it, the school confirmed Monday.
Xavier University has continued to offer insurance that covers contraceptives. A spokeswoman said the decision came after the U.S. Supreme Court in June upheld President Barack Obama’s health care legislation.
University President Michael Graham had told school employees in April that without a legal mandate, it was inconsistent for the school to cover drugs and procedures that the church opposes. He said after the Supreme Court decision that the requirement to offer insurance plans that cover contraceptives is deeply problematic for Catholic universities.
“Religious institutions have never been asked to violate their consciences in this profound a manner,” said Graham, who remains critical of the requirement.
Some Xavier alumni had criticized Graham for playing politics on women’s health. Hundreds signed an online petition urging Xavier to reverse the plan. A message for comment was sent Monday to an alumnus who started the petition. Other alumni had signed a petition supporting Graham. [more]

If catholics really understood how birth control works then they would become true Catholics (the capitalization is intentional). Birth control is not conception control. Birth control causes the death of a fertilized egg (a human). It does not prevent conception. It kills a human.
Franklin.
I want to really understand how birth control works.
What type of birth control are you talking about?
Condoms don’t cause the death of a fertilized egg. Neither does the diaphragm or ring. And the list goes on.
But what those methods do do, Dennis, is they dissociate sex from the intention for which God created it. As our Church teaches us, the unitive and procreative functions of sex never should be foiled; and of course, the methods you mention do in fact foil conception, at least in most cases.
I HAVE TO SCRATCH ANOTHER CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OFF OF THE LIST THAT I WILL PERMIT MY CHILDREN TO ATTEND, BECAUSE X.U. IS TOO CHICKEN TO BE CATHOLIC.
Wouldn’t it be nice if those that don’t believe in following Catholic doctrine, would leave and form their own American Catholic church.
Great idea, David!
What would Jesus do?
Should the need arise, government will not save Xavier from ruin, God will. So play it safe and keep God on your side by standing with the teachings of the Catholic Church. Say no to birth control and abortion.
Florian, what? there is no conflict with church teaching. Contraception is wrong and Catholic instututions should not pay for it. If you believe it is ok then pay for it your self.
If this is true and Xavier allows this to happen, we will no longer support Xavier University with donations of any kind. Many more may follow this as well and it could ultimately hurt many people. Please Father Graham, the test is on and you are under fire from the temptation to forsake your church. DO NOT FALL! Stand firm and tall – and in the end the Truth will set you free.
If you wish to use birth control which is against the teachings of the Catholic Church at least pay for it yourself, same goes for abortions.
The Catholic church has teachings on birth control, and on conscience, which can correctly be said to be in conflict. It’s far easier to laud Catholic teaching than to acknowledge even the possibility of fundamental disagreement on the level of a person’s conscience, or to respect that conscience, which is also Catholic teaching. Without a doubt, both will grow until the Harvest.
A WELL FORMED CONSCIENCE! If a Catholic believes abortion and contraception/sterilization is a matter of conscience he/she does not have a well formed conscience. In his general address on Wed. Oct. 31 the Pope said: “Our faith is truly personal only if it is communal: It can be my faith only if it lives and moves in the ‘we’ of the church, only if it is our faith, the common faith of the one church,” the pope said.
Only by “letting oneself be guided and molded by the faith of the church,” Christians, who despite their weakness, limits and difficulties, become “like an open window” that lets God’s light shine on the world.
Actually your are in error. The church states “informed conscience.” Read the catechism and educate yourself. The dignity of the human person protects all life. Abortion, contraceptives, euthanasia and the like are mortal sins. If you know the truth, the truth wil set you free.
Ah, here’s the rub. The Catholic teaching on birth control does not conflict with my conscience. We are called to properly form our conscience according to the moral teachings of the Church. If your conscience objects to the Church’s teaching on faith or morality then you have an improperly formed conscience. The conscience requires formation and must not be used as an excuse to doe whatever a person “thinks” or “feels” is right. When it comes to good and evil you must know!
Florian — how about if you read what others have said in response to your 4:01 P.M. post and get educated. You continue to post the same non-Catholic garbage over and over. You are a deaf man.
I am very disappointed by the actions of Xavier University. I have attended meetings at this university several times. Are we now afraid to stand by the moral teachings of our Church?
The goats and the sheep are being separated.
