Catholic bishops rebuke Biden over contraception mandate claims

In a rare public rebuke, Catholic bishops chided Vice President Joe Biden for saying during Thursday’s vice-presidential debate that Catholic hospitals and institutions will not be forced to provide contraception coverage to employees.

Without mentioning Biden by name, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops said the “inaccurate” statement “made during the Vice Presidential debate” was “not a fact.”

Biden and GOP vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan are both Catholic.

During Thursday’s debate, Biden said “No religious institution—Catholic or otherwise, including Catholic social services, Georgetown hospital, Mercy hospital, any hospital—none has to either refer contraception, none has to pay for contraception, none has to be a vehicle to get contraception in any insurance policy they provide. That is a fact.”

Biden also said that there is no “assault on the Catholic Church.” Ryan responded, “Why would they keep suing you?”

More than 35 suits have been filed against the Obama administration’s plan to require employers to provide no-cost contraception coverage to employees. Religious employers like churches are exempt from those rules, while affiliated institutions – hospitals, universities and others – that serve the general public are not.

The White House later offered a complex compromise that would allow insurance companies, rather than employers, to pay for the contraceptive coverage. Critics – including the bishops – say it doesn’t go far enough.

“They will have to pay for these things, because the premiums that the organizations (and their employees) are required to pay will still be applied, along with other funds, to cover the cost of these drugs and surgeries,” the bishops’ conference said. [More]

The administration’s “compromise” is a total whitewash. Employers will pay the insurers who will pay for the contraception. It’s just another link in the chain. And there’s no exception for self-insured employers either.

We need to take a stand, now.

Rallies against the contraception mandate in ObamaCare will take place around the country this Saturday, October 20.

For Catholics that are active in their faith, Obama, if re-elected will come in for the final kill of the catholic church in America. His atheist, socialist agenda must be accomplished. Sadly the fast morjority of Catholics in name only, will vote for him.

  3. Concerned says:

A positive thing about Biden is that he says what he believes – even if it gets him in trouble. Unlike most politicians, including the current republican ticket, who say whatever they think someone wants to hear. Or they say things in a veiled way hoping no one will notice. The republican presidential candidate at one time or another has been in favor of everything and against everything. Where does he stand?

One sees what one wants to see…..I guess it doesn’t matter that Biden is wrong, just that he is extremely vocal about it. That I guess makes it okay….?

  4. Elinor Melley says:

There are so many willing to be deceived and so many willing to step up and enable the lies to be perpetuated…….It happens easily when people are ignorant and uninformed of the truth. Wake up! It’s not what you want to hear….what you want to soothe your own consciences with… it’s about what isn’t being said. Biden is a master of deception. His history proves such. Why else would Obama pick him? It’s not about our own personal agendas, we are going to affect future generations with our ignorance. How shall we want to be remembered in years to come.

  5. Florian says:

The USCCB fails to mention in its news release that numerous Catholic entities have sued HHS in federal courts to “overturn the mandate.” Suits typically indicate that facts are in dispute, thus the court is requested to “find the facts.” Lacking rulings from the courts, any correction or rebuke from the USCCB, or anyone else, is entirely premature as well as highly presumptuous.

  6. Ron Bohr says:

The ignorance displayed by the American hierarchy is astounding. Has anyone read the U.S. Constitution? See Article VI and, of course, the First Amendment.

No one is empowered to legislate their own religious preferences at the expense of those of other citizens.

Biden is absolutely correct. He is a veep who is Catholic, not a Catholic veep. That is true religious freedom.

  7. CATHOLIC AND I VOTE says:

If Obama and Biden win the election, we will see a lot more negative changes against the Catholic Church besides the Mandate. Read THE AMATEUR
by Ed Klein to learn their evil intents.
Biden told several lies in that debate – How can he lie with a straight face, or was it when he was laughing at us for believing anything he had to say.
Prayers please for the election for the sanctity of live and religious freedom. God Bless all

  8. Biden was so obviously lying, but his insistence will convince the uninformed that what he said was correct. This is how this administration goes about its business. God help us if they win.

  9. Tholmas Merton says:

It’s quite obvious biden is not a friend to the catholic church or to America in general. Once the bishops are finding out that biden and obammmma are not thier friends or who they thought they were when they helped elect them four years ago. Any catholic with an ounce of sense should be able to see the clear choice in all this, and it Romney not O’biden/O’bammmma.

If “recovdring catholic” had actually listened to the debate, he would have heard what Biden actually said.

  12. Tony says:

I thought that President Obama said, that the mandate would not go into effect fore one year. If I am correct, than Vice President Biden was correct that no Catholic instituin is obliged NOW to follow the mandate.

  13. Recovering Catholic says:

This just goes to show what a devious liar Joe Biden is.
