Polls find Catholic voters evenly split on presidential race
Surveys indicate that the Catholic vote is “too close to call,” a Catholic research center at Georgetown University says.
“The vote of Catholics remains quite evenly split: 47 percent for President Obama and 45 percent for Gov. Romney,” the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate said Sept. 17.
The statistically tied candidates have rarely topped 50 percent of the Catholic vote. The small percentage of Catholic registered voters will likely decide the winner of the Catholic vote in a country where one in four voters is Catholic.
The research center aggregated data from polls that surveyed a Catholic sub-group, including Pew, Gallup and TIPP.
Among Protestants, Gov. Romney leads the president by 51 to 40 percent. Those without a religious affiliation largely favor the president, with 63 percent saying they will vote for him and only 27 percent stating they will vote for Romney.
Democrat President Obama has led Gov. Romney by nine percentage points once in March and once in July, while the Republican nominee had his biggest lead of five percentage points in April.
Catholic voters have long been considered an important voting bloc because the presidential candidate who wins over the majority of Catholic voters generally wins the election. However, some commentators question whether the “Catholic vote” exists given the divisions among Catholics.
The Nov. 6, 2012 presidential election is expected to be very close, with the two candidates vying to win every percentage point of the electorate they can to their corner.

tony, and Florian, I know what is like to be raised poor. My Father left us, his wife and four children. My grandparent did all they could to support us. We turned out well. I don’t begrudge mitt for being raise rich, that is the American dream to be fiancially successful, to be comfortable etc. My grandparents came from Italy with nothing My grandfather peddled fish as a young man. His dream and goal was fulfilled as he grew into one of the largarest fish business in New York. My grandmother, her sister, all the relitives worked there in the fish stiore and labored long hours. Here is the a different philosophys of mitt and Obama. Work hard anf try vs The federal Goverment will take care of you with “Intitalments”. What parent doesn’t want to see their children succeed and be well off?
Mr Romney & Mr Ryan would like us to believe that a small pecentage of Catholic voters will make all the difference in their favor come November. But that’s not at all likely to happen with Mitt’s continuing gaffes, such as the 47% tape and the “babykilling” accusation leveled at Democrats, Catholics and others who vote conscience, vote Obama etc. That sort of theology, if it is theology, belongeth not in a voting booth.
The Democrat Party is responsible for the murder of 52,000,000 American babies. And Catholic Democrats are responsible for those murders. You can’t excuse your self from that truth by saying, “But I don’t support abortion.” Too bad, you did when you voted Democratic because you give the party the political power to carry out their party polices, and abortion-on-demand remaining the law-of-the-land is Democrat policy number 1.
P.S. Tony and Florian, the Democrat Party doesn’t care about the little people in your little story and you shouldn’t be so insulting to those people either, implying they don’t have moral principles they live by that would trump the immorality of voting for baby killers, homosexual marriages makers and corrupt leaders who pay off their buddies with our tax dollars in phony companies that go bankrupt.
Romney is for abortion for victims of rape. He is not as prolife as you think.
We must remember that 70% of Catholics are catholics in name only. They are not active in church life, nor know what the church teaches. they are mostly liberal, and ride the wave of socialism, secularism. They see Obama as their hero. Obama know this as he is counting on their vote. The Bishops have lossed it in presenting the moral, catholic view, When you see in the parking lots of your church Obama stickers, Its over.
A catholic cleaning lady who is getting minimum wage helping her dish washer minimum wage husband, feed and cloth her children and give them shelter is going to vote for Obama and I don’t blame her.
Many of these individuals are in this economical situation due to personal choice. Our original political system was established to provide every individual the ecomomical opportunity to to be successful. Our current politicians are only interest in getting re-elected with 49% of individuals currently paying no federal taxes at all. Our country is quickly moving away from one that rewards individuals for there abilities and desire to improve themselves thought hard work and knowledge to a country that rewards individuals that simply exist to extract the ecomomical benefits earned by others.
Romney has proven by his recent remarks that he has no sense at all of the struggling family members of our country who have to work for minimum wage to feed a family. Talk about a lack of respect for family life.
Right on, Tony! That’s why Mitt and Paul would snatch a poor man’ pet lamb to serve up for their big buck fundraising dinners. Having grown rich, they want to grow richer and richer stlll — at our expense.
