Mary is model of mature Christian faith, pope tells Marian scholars
Mary, the Mother of God, represents a “full and mature” Christian faith, one that all believers should imitate, Pope Benedict XVI told Marian experts attending an academic conference in Rome.
People can look to Mary as an example of living according to God’s will with confidence and joy, he said Sept. 8, the Feast of the Nativity of Mary.
The pope said he put the upcoming Year of Faith under Mary’s protection because she is “an exemplary model of the faith” and is “blessed because she believed.”
He voiced hope that the year, which begins Oct. 11, would be “a true moment of grace in which Mary’s faith precedes us and accompanies us as a bright beacon and as a model of fullness and Christian maturity.”
The pope asked that people continue to trust in Mary as they draw from her “enthusiasm and joy to live our vocation as children of God with ever greater commitment and consistency.”
The pope made his remarks to about 350 participants in the Sept. 4-9 Mariological Marian International Congress, sponsored by the Pontifical Marian International Academy. [more]

Some older Catholics recall that Pope John XXIII opened Vatican II on what was at the time the feast of the Maternity of Mary. The feast was later morphed into the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God (New Years Day) along with the Feast of the Circumcision, now abolished.
Seems like terms such as “maternity” and “circumcision” are too bold for the liturgical calendar! However, the same calendar still counts nine months (!) between Annunciation (3/25) and Christmas (12/25), as well as between Immaculate Conception (12/8) and Mary’s Nativity (9/8).
Go figure . . .
It’s interesting that when Our Lady was asked by the seers at Medjugorie apparition site, she responded that she was just like all other women of her time. The good news about that is that all of us will one day be in that same dimension of unconditionally love where she comes from now.
Not all of us, Recovering. Read what Jesus said at Matthew 7:13-14.
I like to see Mary in her role as our model for being a faithful disciple. We in the Church have almost made her into a goddess and have made her a super human person. She is just like us though preserved from original sin.
And that preservation from original sin, Tony, as well as the fact that she herself never committed a sin, is a huge difference from all of the rest of us.
