French cardinal says ‘gay marriage’ opens door to incest, polygamy
Cardinal Philippe Barbarin of Lyon said government approval of gay “marriage” in France could pave the way for the legalization of incest and polygamy.
The cardinal made his statements on Sept.14 after a meeting with France’s Interior Minister, Manuel Valls.
In an interview on French radio, Cardinal Barbarin said that same-sex unions constitute “a breakdown in society.”
“This will lead to unspeakable consequences. Next they will want unions between three or four people. One day, perhaps, the prohibition against incest will fall,” the cardinal warned.
French President Francois Hollande promised during his campaign that if elected he would push for the legalization of homosexual marriage and adoption by same-sex couples.
A bill that would allow such practices is currently under debate in France and is expected to come before the Council of Ministers on Oct. 24.
“Marriage is a word that represents a wall, in order to ensure that in the most fragile place of society, that is, in a woman who gives life to a child, all of the stable conditions are present to ensure that this takes place under the best of possibilities,” the cardinal said. [More]

Doom, doom and gloom I say! You young generation are all doomed by your gay marriage, single mothers, your hightop shoes, and your devil rock music.
Oh wait, this is exactly the same things that were said about interracial marriages, and we all know that turned out – the world is still spinning, and now nobody except for people on the extreme fringes of society even gives it a second thought. Which is exactly what will happen here.
Oh, and there are legitimate reasons that incest and polygamy are illegal – with incest, the genes of immediate family (and, arguably, cousins) are too similar that they immensely increase the risk of complications of the child – think Down’s Syndrome, birth defects, etc. And for polygamy, it is an extremely simple issue – next of kin, and power of attorney are both legal instruments that cannot be passed on to multiple people, so legally speaking you cannot be legally married to multiple people and grant these benefits/responsibilities to two different parties. However, you can define religious marriage all you want to, so you are free to think of yourself as married to multiple people even if the state only recognizes one marriage as legally binding. And that is a matter of current US law (and I suspect, French law as well), and this will not change in any way if gay marriage is allowed.
So, in the end, there is no legal reason to disallow gay marriage. If religious don’t want to recognize gay marriage, or interracial marriages, or if they do want to recognize polygamy as a religious marriage, they current are, and will continue to be, allowed to do so regardless of the legal definition of marriage. There is simply no reason not to allow legal gay marriage, and it is only a matter of time before it stops being a big deal.
Dear Mr. logic bat — gay marriage undermnines the sacredness of heterosexual marriage. You undermine heterosexual marriage, and you undermine society. Within the last month, THREE people were married in some South American country. Man is making the same mistake made by Adam and Eve — they are defining their own rules, they are being the arbiters of what is right and what is wrong. There are consequences for sin, blag — yes, the world has not yet stopped spinning on its axis, but look at the cultural mess we have in this country — highest incarcertation rate in the world, and going down the tubes economically. We will be reaping the whirlwind in the very near future. At Famita, the Blessed Mother said war is a punishment from God for the sins of mankind. God is NOT a disinterested observer. You are look the foolish virgins who did not prepare — when it gets here, it will be too late. You think you are so smart, blag, but your mind (and mine) is puny in relation to the mind of the Creator of the universe.
Above should say, “You are LIKE (not look) …”
There are many more people married to one person in Utah, and yet, the rest of the US does not care, and is not impacted at all. So, even if your unsubstantiated claim is true, you have not made any connection between that and allowing homosexual marriage in the US.
Furthermore, using a logic bat on your post, you have not made any connection between gay marriage and the US’s highest incarceration rate in the world, and “going down the tubes economically”. In fact, those things happened BEFORE gay marriage started to be legalized, so the correlation you seek is tenuous at best.
And finally, you can believe what you like about the connection between heterosexual marriage and society, but the fact remains that there are people in the US that do not think the same way as you do, and under the First Amendment, neither you nor the government can use religious-based laws to restrict the rights of a minority.
blag , as if it isn’t already enough to deal with a child who has special needs you perpetuate foolish notions of why such things happen . You are like Job’s friends , you don’t know what you are talking about .
Prohibition of incest/ marrying close relatives in any society is rather to safeguard children in the family from being viewed as sexual objects . ” Down
Syndrome etc. ” to quote you is not the result of incest .
If you want to defend gay marriage , fine . But bringing unjust accusations against others has no place in your argument and is extremely hurtful .
The Cardinal’s remarks are historically inaccurate and simple-minded at best. Too intensely focussed on an ideological point. The Catholic Church would serve us better if it became more relevant to the realities of life.
Yea, you’re right, Carl — the integrity of families is just an ideological point. Get your head in the game.
