Christian leaders praise Romney, Republican platform

A diverse group of 28 Christian leaders has sent a letter to GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney praising him for the social policies included in the Republican Party’s 2012 platform.

“On those matters of social policy that address our deepest concerns—the sanctity of human life, compassion for the downtrodden and persecuted, the identity of the family, and religious freedom, the Republican platform speaks clearly and powerfully,” the letter says.

The group also says the platform demonstrates the principles that will guide his administration if Romney is elected president.

The letter includes selections of the platform which its signatories particularly admire.

The Republican Party’s “compassion for the downtrodden and persecuted” is exemplified in the letter by its allegiance to ending religious persecution overseas, to ending human trafficking, and a commitment to non-discrimination.

The letter applauds the defense of conscience and religious freedom in the platform, as well as the definition of marriage as the union of one man and one woman.

The letter also focuses on the moral principles in the Republican platform, which are “squarely within the Judeo-Christian tradition” and are “at stake in today’s society.”

Romney and his running mate, Paul Ryan, are thanked for running on a platform which is a “political compass” in the “confusing moral thickets of our day.”

The signers encourage support for Romney even though there may be “differences in a candidate’s theological doctrine.” This is despite the fact that “some have tempered their enthusiasm” for the Mormon candidate. Government policy is the issue, the letter says, not theology.

The letter is signed by 28 Christian leaders, both Catholic and Protestant, and includes the organizations to which each of the individuals belongs. [More]

Tony, Tony, you are so misguided by the nuns on the bus. You liberals are so angry at people who succeed and are sucessful. In Romneys release of his taxes, see how many millions he gave to charity. Yet it is never enough. Obama offers a plan of Joseph Satlinism socialism to America and the liberal Democrats are singing and dancing to his tune The nuns wave on the illlegal emigrates to enter America illegally. They are not obligated to obey our laws as my grandparents were and did.

  2. Tony says:

The Republican party will deny the fetus after it is born any handout to help him out of a rough spot.
It will deny the 70 year old people today who have been out of their mothers womb for years adequate helth care and medicare, replacing it with a voucher program.

  3. Florian says:

Romney&Ryan aim to downsize government, strip away its regulatory powers, and fill the void with “corporatocracy.” The wealthy will increase their wealth, acquire more power to preserve it, and effectively rule the country (under the GOP banner of course) as — remember this ?! — the PERMANENT MAJORITY.

The middle class need not apply — and no room for you in the inn, Jesus.

  4. Tony says:

The sanctity of human life has to be respected beyond the womb all through the life of the individual.
Romney is not that prolife, he is for abortion in the case of rape or incest. Face it, that is not prolife.
Ryan wants to balance the budget on the backs of the poor, not prolife at all.
The Democratic Party is really the party of the poor, they always have been, that’s wh there are so any Irish, And Italians among them.

    • Richard Andrew says:

Tony, Have you forgotten that the Democratic Party also endorses abortion? The poorest of the poor, the weakest of the weak, they consign to the grave before they even see the light of day!

      • GREG SMITH says:

Richard ~ Please note that the Republicans have had the White House, both houses of congress and a majority of Supreme Court appointees several times since Roe and very little has changed. I’ve come to the conclusion that the only way to greatly lower the number of abortions is to convince women not to have them AND to provide them with resources to raiose thier children.

        • Catholic Lady says:

The Canada Health Act is federal law which requires provinces to fund “medically necessary” services, but it does not define abortion as being medically necessary. When Ontario ligislators deem an elective procedure as “not medically necessary” it does not get insured by OHIP, and as a result, will not receive public funding. Therefore, it is clear that Ontario MPP’s can easily delist obortion from OHIP. What they lack is the moral fortitude to do the right thing. In almost all abortion cases, the life of the mother is not in danger. It is clearly not a medical necessity and should not be funded as such…Our Parish financially aids “The Rose” a group that reaches out to women who find themselves pregnant and unprepared to carry the child to term. Helping with accomodation, food, clothing and baby supplies. Also helping with formal education – sometimes helping a single mom to stay in school, both before and after the blessed event, the birth of her child.

        • Tony says:

Greg, you are correct, legislation doesn’t limit abortions.
