Catholic nun brings her star power to DNC
Sister Simone Campbell got what may have been the biggest media platform of her life on Wednesday night, when she addressed the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina. But the Catholic nun had plenty of star power before that.
Walking around Charlotte this week, Campbell was repeatedly stopped by fans who wanted to pose for pictures.
They had seen her on “The Colbert Report,” pushing back on the Vatican’s crackdown on American nuns, or read about the “nuns on the bus” tour that Simone organized to decry Rep. Paul Ryan’s federal budget proposal.
“One woman came up to me and said ‘my husband loves you; I’d be jealous if you weren’t a nun,’ ” Campbell, 66, said Tuesday night.
By asking her to speak at their convention, the Democrats appear keen to capitalize on Campbell’s budding celebrity at a moment when the official Roman Catholic Church has been critical of the Obama administration, claiming that it is infringing on religious liberty.
And at a convention that is revolving largely around an alleged GOP-led “war on women,” Campbell is a poignant feminist symbol. She has stood up to the Vatican’s criticisms of American nuns for what the church says is their fixation on progressive advocacy at the expense of promoting socially conservative positions. [more]

Tom, think about it, many of the habits for the women religious were widows garb, like Mother Cabrinis group or Mother Seatons group or the Sisters of st Joseph. Clothes don’t make the religious.
Just as in any profession this woman is a JC Penny nun. A woman who claims to work for Jesus but feels confined by the uniform of her vocation. How many times have i heard people complain that Fr. doesn’t wear his collar anymore. Or Fr. is seen more in “civilian” cloths than Clerical s. However when a so called nun ditches the habit it’s so she can serve the poor in an atmosphere of closeness instead of her vocational garb. Yes, I think both priest and nun should dress the part as the age old saying goes: “Out of sight out of mind”.
To Jim. Your comments to Catholic Lady are disgracful. I have lost any respect for you as a Catholic. Now I see what Tony has to deal with. When you make the sign of the cross, I’m sure you say: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit and Jim. You sure judge and condom people with such vile remarks.
I am not sure Jim would give first billing to Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
I don’t remember a nun or a bishop being involved with political agendas before. What’s the deal!
Margaret.
Have you ever heard of Father Charles Edward Coughlin (October 25, 1891 – October 27, 1979)?
The list of politically active clergy is almost endless when it comes to the fight for civil rights.
Jim, at prayer this morning the words of Jesus Feed my lambs feed my sheep kept coming to my mind. As sister said she is one hundred percent the bishops in their effort to provide for the hungry and needy among us.
You got pretty down and nasty speculating about the sexual sins of this woman. I am apualed. No where has there been in even the slightest suggestion of any impropriety of Sister. During the last week or so we have seen your beloved bishops driving drunk with his mom in the car, and we saw a bishop found guilty in hiding the sexual sis of yet another one of the many priests who weren’t able to handle is sexual desires. Shall we even speak of the many document documented sinful sexual acts of the priests and bishops. I wonder what example these bishops and priests set to those who have a problem with masturbation.
It’s the “HEART” that God cares out — not the other bodily appendages. Occasional masturbation is just needed sexual release that every human being has. It’s not some kind of hellish sinful act that’s going to send a person to Hades.
Tony — “feed my lambs” referred to spiritual feeding — so, as I pointed out before, Campbell feeds physically, but argues for sinful behaviors, including sexual behaviors. So, she feeds bellys while leading the now-satiated people to Hell. I’d rather starve and go to Heaven than be full and go to Hell. With regard to the sexual behavior: feminist Farley supports gay sex, masturabation and birth control. It is not a stretch to assume feminist Campbell supports the same sexual standards. Also, to assume Campbell has not committed a sexual sin since become a sister is naive.
And what shall we say of bishops who drive drunk, or bisops who bare felons for covering up for their sexually perverted priests? And, I believe one commits a sin of rash judgement when one assumes another commits sin without evidence.
The issue of the behavior of another (such as a bishop who is slightly over the legal limit) is irrelevant for judging Campbell’s behavior. With regard to assuming sin — actually, I don’t assume it at all — I KNOW it. How? Romans 3:23, among a million other places, tells us we all are sinners. The Church teaches that there are only seven varieties of sin, including lust, envy, sloth, gluttony, pride, greed (can’t remenmber the seventh). These sins are common to mankind, including to me. So, assuming Campbell is a sinful human is not speculation at all, at least not for a Christian — it is an incontrovertible fact. Now, I don’t know, of course, if Campbell committed a sexual sin since joining her order; but, one of the holiest person who ever has lived, St. Faustina, admitted as much in her Diary that she was guilty of sexual sin at least before she entered the convent. Campbell probably supports heretic Farley — who in turn argues for masturbation and homosexuality. So, I’d take 100:1 odds that Campbell is guilty of sexual sin since joining her order.
You can take all the odds you want you are rash judging. There are people like Aquinas who never sinned against purity thus the name Angelic Doctor.
The drunken bisop, the guy that was just convicted in the cover up, the Canadian bisop in the child porn case, the two bishops from Palm Beach who were involed in child abuse make The Sisters look like a choir of angels.
One grievous wrong does not make another less-grievous wrong less-wrong. Campbell will be judged against a criterion of God’s perfection, not against a sinful bishop’s conduct. And, no, not rash at all — just realitic. Aquinas perhaps never was guilty of a sexual sin, but if you read in the Catechism (you know, Tony, that book on your shelf that collects dust), you will see tha Aquinas’ angel appeared to him and told him God had granted his request for perpetual chastity, but the angel also told him that NO ONE (including Campbell) can achieve sexual purity on their own power. I doubt Campbell has prayed for chastity like Aquinasa. I do believe Campbell has been guilty of sexual sin on more than one occasion since joining an order.
Jim, forgive me but I really think you may have a problem accusing this woman. Look at the Gospel where Jesus said, has no one condemned you? Then neither do I condemn you. That should be our model.
But you neglect, Tony, the rest of Jesus’ sentence, which was, “… then neither do I condemn you, but go and sin no more.” Jesus clearly was concerned about a person correcting their sinful behavior. The more we sin, the more we are blinded to our sinfulness (Romans chapter one), and the more it distorts our perception about all manner of things.
Jim, but you are pointing an accusitory finger at Sister without due cause, without evidence you have found her guilty of sexual sin. That is so wrong, so horrible, so mean spirited , so unbecoming of you. Frankly I expected better of you.
Tony — if you look back at my post, here is all I said about Campbell: “Also, I don’t know, but I wonder what kind of sexual sin she may have unconfessed.” Notice how I didn’t actually accuse her of anything; in fact, the sentence starts out with “I don’t know”, then later uses the conditional word “may” to indicate lack of complete certainty. So, think what you want, but the question I pose is reasonable, especially in light of what heretical feminist “sisters” like Farley have proclaimed.
I guess if you are free to call Sisters heretical, we can call the bidsopsmentioned before drunkards, and sexual perverts, and felons.
Tony — your characterizations of the bishops must satisfy the definition of those words. I previously established that the persons I was calling heretic did in fact meet the definition of heretic. If a bishop meets the definition of felon or whatever, then you can accurately call him that.
Jim, too bad we have bisops who have lived out their perverted homosexual desires, and some bishops coverd up the sexual perversions of their priests and another bishop drove under the influence. What an immoral sick lot the bisops are.
Now Tony, I must correct you — that is going too far. You can’t call ALL the bishops a “sick lot” — in fact, the vast majority of bishops are good men. Other bishops, like the one from KC this week, did not do what you think they did — the KC bishop was advised by an expert that a pedophile priest was not a pedophile, and that he was safe for ministry. If the mental health professional gets it wrong, we can’t expect the poor bishop to get it right. You can call bishops what you want, but please ensure you have done proper investigation and don’t draw unwarranted conclusions.
Jim your advice to me I say to you oont draw unwarranted conclusions.
Nice beads and earrings on sister. I didn’t see a cross or rosaries though. OHHH!! I FORGOT!!! They have gone beyond Christ and His Church. By the way, the Vatican did not repremand them for their works of charity. It was because they did not uphold the Churches teachings on Abortion, Gay Marriage and Contraceptives. Of course if they did speak out against these moral issues while continuing to work for the poor noone would have noticed them. The wide road gets the most followers. I might know why there was no cross or rosaries to be found on Simome. Socialists hate anything to do with God. I may be wrong however about the Democrats. If I recall, they believe the Obama is God.
Michael — why would you look for a cross or a rosary on fake sister? Only Christians and Catholics have those.
You have no idea what is in her heart – but you call her religious vows fake. My oh my, go back to your postings about Groschel and see how phony your words are. Your statements are filled with duplicity and of course that makes your postings hypocritical.
I remember when nuns were Holy women , true to the teachings of Jesus Christ.
With nuns like her it’s no wonder our country is has no moral values.
Keith,
I remember when clergy weren’t pedophiles and cared about the poor!
You say your world has “no moral values”. Very sad, my world is founded on strong moral values.
Go NUNS!!!
And what constitutes holiness? Isn’t Serving God in the poor as Jesus asked us too enough. Sister is very true to the teacings of Christ in her devotion to others.
She made me want to be Catholic again. She said all the right stuff.
Maybe we could all get buttons saying ” I am with the nuns on the bus”.
Mary.
The Nuns did have t-shirts but they were gone before I could donate and get one. I was still able to donate.
This site has Nuns stickers and such:
http://www.cafepress.com/+nun+bumper-stickers
Unfortunately this site does not give any of the money to the Nuns.
Go NUNS!!!
Sister Simone Campbell symbolizes why the Catholic faith is still beautiful.
Sister Simone was glorious in her convention speech, a true credit to all of us in the church and women in particular. I particularly liked her saying, I am my Brothers keeper.
Did Sister Simone point you in the direction to where you would find God? Did she bring glory to Our Lord Jesus? Or does the good sister and her collegues point to themselves?
Yes catholic lady rushed points to serving God in our neighbor, wwhere Jesus Himslf points us.
She points us to serving God in our neighbor.
The question is; does this lady show those who are lost the way? Does she point them to God, or to herself and her fellow nuns? Does she bring Glory to God???
Of course she does, st Francis said to preach the Gospel all the time and if necessary use words. sisters actions speak loudly.
Catholic Lady — I agree that fake sister Simone does not point others to God. Our own Church acknowledges that virtually all of us have mixed motives for doing something, including good things. Campbell brings glory to herself for her works, and it advances her socialist political agenda. She may get a person’s belly full, but their soul remains empty of true food — Jesus Christ received worthily in the Eucharist. My guess is she does not lead them to the Eucharist because she doesn’t like the hierarchy — the leaders of the Church appointed by Jesus Christ — all that much. Also, I don’t know, but I wonder what kind of sexual sin she may have unconfessed. I do not trust people like her at all. Earlier in my life, before I came back to the Church, I probably wouldn’t have given her politics much thought, and would have thought, like others, that she is at least a compassionate lady. But, sorry, if you don’t lead people to the Truth, in the final analysis you are not only not compassionate, but you are a curse to that person. I doubt Campbell would give appropriate guidance in the sexual area to a person masturbating or with same-sex attractions, since people of her ilk follow heretic sister Farley, who essentially says masturbation and gay sex are okay.
All judgments based on your owqn suppositions – not fact. Where is the same attitude of Christian forgiveness you called for for Groschel? Where is the same attitude that since you don’t have all the facts you can’t judge? Why does this only apply to those who you agree with? Why are there 2 sets of standards? Substitute Groschel’s name where you have Campbell’s name or the name calling of “Fake Sister” and it seems that you have the same argument that those who disagree with Groschel. Once again Hypocrisy makes for a very weak argument.
Again, Jim, it’s the “HEART” that God cares about — not the other bodily appendages.
Recovering — the Blessed Mother told the Fatima visionaries that more souls go to Hell for sins of the flesh than for any other reason — so maybe God DOES care how we use our sexuality. You have been duped by the enemy, Recovering.
Wow Jim, by your own definition and by your own admission you are a curse to others. I would not have gone that far, but no one can argue with you.
Jim, at prayer this morning the words of Jesus Feed my lambs feed my sheep kept coming to my mind. As sister said she is one hundred percent the bishops in their effort to provide for the hungry and needy among us.
