Romney invites NY Catholic Cardinal Dolan to offer benediction after acceptance speech
Roman Catholic Cardinal Timothy Dolan will give the benediction at the Republican National Convention on the night Mitt Romney accepts the presidential nomination. The cardinal’s spokesman said the appearance was not an endorsement.
Dolan is the New York archbishop and president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. Romney announced Dolan’s appearance in an interview with Raymond Arroyo’s “The World Over Live” on EWTN Catholic network.
The archdiocese is one of more than 40 Catholic groups suing President Barack Obama over his mandate that employers provide health insurance that includes free birth control as a preventive service. The rule exempts houses of worship but includes faith-affiliated employers such as hospitals, charities and colleges.
Obama promised to change the requirement so that insurance companies and not faith-affiliated employers would pay for the coverage. But details have not been worked out and many religious leaders have said the compromise appears to be unworkable. [more]

Of course it’s an endorsement. Just like the bishops of Madison and Denver are now endorsing the Ryan budget, even though the U.S. Conference of Bishops has called the budget immoral. And remember the powerful Catholic-Mormon alliance for Proposition 8 in California, an alliance brokered by the Catholic archbishop. To paraphrase the famous movie line, non-endorsement endorsements.
Here’s the real deal. A war is going on between the Obama administration with its secular, pagan, socialist agenda’s. The future of the Catholic church in America is at stake. Dolan cannot TELL anyone how to vote. Is his presence there suggesting that Catholics and other Orthodox religions really consider Romney/Ryan when they vote? You bet your ass! If he has to pray, sing “Hello Dolly” on this, I am behind Dolan. Down the road, if Obama get in and comes in for the kill of the Catholic church, you will be cying that Dolan didn’t do enough. You liberal Catholic Democrats just don’t get it!
Of course it’s an endorsement! Is it a sin to pass the job of lying over to his aide?
So much for separation of church, and state! Of course there has been no separation for years… too bad!
This is Great News!!! Rick Warren endorsed Obama and now finally have a Catholic Cardinal giving Benedication and the Dems are going crazy.
This is not an endorsement …But I must say I am happy to be a Vatholic and get this news..
If Dolan was asked to give the closing prayer at the Democratic Convention he would be seen as a hero and would receive plenty of accolades you others commenting on this blog. In a way, I wish that the tax exempt status would be removed from the church. Then the Bishops could endorse candidates and actively work toward their election. Be careful what you wish for!
What a terrible joke. Not endorsing the GOP? Really!!
This just goes to show how uneducated these seemingly educated bishops are. Doesn’t he realize he is being used and manipulated by the Republican nominee. What a sham!
Don’t kid yourself. The bishop is as sly as a fox; he knows exactly what he’s doing.
Your comment, RC, based as always on extensive research, talking to people who know the cardinal, etc. Again, drawing conclusions about the motivation of someone you’ve never even met. To quote Shania: “that don’t impress me much.”
Of course it’s not an “endorsement” because we all know Dolan is a died in the cassock liberal who supported obammma in the first election and is not trying to cover up his mistake. Dolan is not the bishop people think he is.
Cardinal D0lan is more of a comedian and politician than a Christian minister – alas Rome`s choice to lead the Cathloc Church in America.
God HELP America!
Who’s he fooling? It is an endorsement and the church should be stripped of its tax-exempt status!
Mr $Romney and Mr $Ryan are earnestly courting the Catholic vote, and Cardinal Dolan is their choice as the vote fairy. Their goal in common is to get that black man out of THEIR White House and enhance the wealth of the wealthy, including the biggest landowner on the island of Manhattan (initials = TMD). How much more partisan do they have to get before the IRS lifts their tax exemptions?
I honestly hope that the Catholic Church forfeits its tax exempt status for this. Maybe the government should quit funding all the Catholic Charities projects as well. For anyone to believe that this is not a ploy to lure Catholics to the GOP is being frighteningly naive! If Cardinal Dolan wants to play in the political arena, let him do it. But he should at least be honest about it. This could be danderous tertory for a large religious organization. Think about it…if the IRS decided to make an example of the Catholic church because of their political involvement by removing their tax exempt status, while lawyers were busy fighting it in the courts, thousands of parishes who are barely surviving now would be closing. Is that what we want? No master what side you’re on, be very careful what you wish for here…
You are SO right Father and I commend you for speaking up. I am appalled at Dolan’s transparent courting of the GOP. If ever there was a reason NOT to vote GOP, this political posturing by a cardinal is a dandy one
If the Catholic Church’s tax-exempt status were removed, all the other protestant sects’ tax-exempt statuses would also have to be removed, starting with the Rev. Jeremiah Wright (Obama’s pastor for 20 years before he was disowned by Obama).
There is a saying: ” Don’t tell me a sermon, show me one.” We got the message.
Wow, I see this as a very positive sign.
