NY Catholic cardinal suing Obama on birth control invites president, Romney to charity dinner

New York Roman Catholic Cardinal Timothy Dolan is suing the Obama administration, but he’s inviting President Barack Obama to dinner anyway.

Dolan has asked both Obama and presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney to attend the annual Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation charity dinner on Oct. 18, a spokesman for the Archdiocese of New York said Tuesday.

Romney has accepted. The Obama campaign hasn’t said publicly whether the president will attend, but Dolan’s spokesman, Joseph Zwilling, said Obama has accepted, too.

The Archdiocese of New York is among more than 40 Catholic organizations, charities and schools that are suing over Obama’s mandate that employers provide health insurance that covers birth control. Evangelical, Jewish and other religious leaders have joined U.S. bishops in pressing for a broader religious exemption, including for faith-affiliated hospitals, colleges and social service groups.

As the head of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Dolan has said the White House policy is “strangling” the church. Obama has offered an accommodation, but Catholic leaders and others have said the changes don’t go far enough.

The Smith dinner, in its 67th year, is a white-tie event at the Waldorf-Astoria that is customarily attended by presidents and candidates in an election year. Among the speakers have been John F. Kennedy, Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush. In 2008, Obama and Republican presidential nominee John McCain attended. The speeches are mostly self-deprecating and lighthearted, and the donations go to needy children.

Oh Florian – you need to read and understand the political system before responding. Did you not read John McCain attended the dinner in 2008???
Watch the convention coming this month and you will see Gov Mitt Romney on the ballot as the Republican presidential candidate. Read and understand the political system of electoral votes.

The donations go to “needy children”.
What kind of hypocrite uses his high office to kill babies and then attends a fundraiser to support them??????

    • Jim says:

Obama, of course! What did you expect from Mr. 666 from IL?

      • Tony says:

        Jim, it is PRESIDENT OBAMA,
give the leader of our country the same respect you call for, for a cardinal of the church.

        • Jim says:

          Good morning to you, Tony.

          • Tony says:

Hey Jimmy, you got your little Cathechism and soap box ready to badger the rest of us with your myopic vision of all things Caholic for this day?

            • Jim says:

Hmmm, unless I miss by guess, Tony boy, you’re sounding a little condescending there. Tony, if this is your last day on Earth, do you really want to spend it responding with emotional, senseless comments to my posts? Is this a good use of your time? You’ll never be able to get this day back again. There may be a tomorrow, but this particular day will be gone forever when it is gone.

            • Jim says:

And, apparently Tony boy, you are denigrating the Catechism now. Well, after all, you do have a master’s degree, having been taught by puffed-up, heretical theologicans with Ph.D.s who fancied themselves smarter than God. Hey, how come the Vatican isn’t consulting YOU on matters of dogma?

              • Tony says:

Hey Jimmy, your comments have become like gas blown in the wind, of no significance.
Your talking down to people, your arrogance, your anti woman, statements, just aren’t gonna cut it anymore.

It apears that most Canadians have more respect for your President than you Americans do. I live in Ontario and although some complain that our Ontario Hospital Insurance is flawed in many ways,It does provide benefits to all. It does not to my knowledge cover perscription drugs and therefore does not cover birth control drugs. However much to the dismay of good Catholic men and women it will provide for abortion. There was at one time some provisions that had to be met before obtaining an abortion; if pregnancy would be depermental to the health of the mother, or if it was the result of rape but some people have managed to get around these and it has become “abortion on demand”. Because the system is flawed does not mean that it should be thrown out, we do not throw the baby out with the bath water. It means that we must keep what is good and working well and continue to work to improve the system. Catholics continue to work to have remove Abortion from our Health Care system and our country just as Americans do in your great country. However we do not work to remove this social net which ensures that One does not lose their home; when one is fighting Cancer or has been injured in a traffic accident. Showing our Health Card gives us imediate access to the hospital and the emergency care it provides..We carry life Insurance, car insurance, and insure our homes and business against fire and theft etc. as you do. So why would we not insure our health?

          • Jim says:

Catholic Lady — well, don’t judge how much respect we here in the USA have for Obama based on the posts on this blog. The fact is, the media the world over — here in the USA, in Canada, in Europe and other places — is grossly biased and, because they present themselves as unbiased, they are despicable. Thus, Candadians might respect Obama, but it is almost exclusively because of the lying media that consistently presents his failed policies in a positive light. For example, in the past week, our unemployment rate ticked up by 0.1% Do you know what the headline and the story said? It said the economic news was good, because the news on jobs wasn’t as bad as expected. The media disgust me. If we had a truly unbiased media, Obama would get about a total of ten votes in the upcoming election.

            • Catholic Lady says:

Jim; the respect I am talking about is the respect for President Obama’s position as the leader of your great and democratic country. He is after all the leader of one of the most wonderful countries in this world. Although there are many people who do not agree with our Prime Minister in Canada – some regretfully using only hi surname when when speaking against some of his partys policies.. He is still the Prime Minister of Canada, and as such deserves to be spoken of respectifully and prayed for.

          • Jim says:

And the ansswer to “why would we not insure our health” is simple. What Obama has done is pointed a gun at the heads of many Americans and said, “you will pay for the care of others; you have no choice. If you do not pay, you go to jail (for avoiding the payment of taxes).” Any reasonable person would provide care to anyone in urgent need; but people are responsible for their own lives, and they must work and save and purchase their own health insurance. Creating nationalized health care pushes the USA much much closer to socialism. In the USA, health care constxtxtes 16% of our GNP. Now that Obama has hijacked that sector of our economy, he controls one-sixth of the entire economy. The Catholic Church teaches the principle of subsidiarity — that is, you provide necessary services on the most local level possible. Making health care a federal program is as far away from subsidiarity as you can get. Also, since liberals feel so compelled to provide for everyone, I have a simple solution for them: give your own money away and / or volunteer your time. But that is not what liberals do. What they do is raid the pockets of others and insist those others support everyone else, including the liberals.

            • blag says:

Really Jim, do you have any peer-reviewed study backing up your assertions that liberals do not volunteer their time or money as much as conservatives? Or are you just spouting right-wing claptrap?

          • Jim says:

Finally, Catholic Lady, here is a link to a National Catholic Register article written by the executive director and ethicist of the Catholic Medical Association here in the USA. The article will take you perhaps five minutes to read through it, but it gives specifics concerning why ObamaCare will be horrific: http://www.ncregister.com/site/article/is-there-a-future-for-catholic-doctors/

            • Catholic Lady says:

Jim: Thanks for enlighting me, I have infact read the link only once and do not at this time (going to the gym with my fried) have time to re read it so do not feel able to comment at this time.

              • Jim says:

I look forward to your comments when you do have time, Catholic Lady — particularly since you live in a country with socialized medicine.

                • Catholic Lady says:

George Orwell said at age 50, everyone has the face he deserves – One might say that everyone has the health care he deserves but that is not always true. There are people in both Canada and the U.S.A. who have worked and contributed to our countries all their adult lives but are now unemployed because of a weak economy which is affecting countries through out the “Whole World”. Do they not deserve the same good health care that you and I enjoy? One upon a time in Canada, there were people who could not afford to go to the doctor..

                  • Jim says:

Catholic Lady — you certainly raise some good points; and, I agree that it is inhumane to not provide health care to those in need who truly cannot afford it. The problem is how to provide that health care. If Catholics and other Christians feel that strongly, then they should make contributions to support free health care, and / or volunteer their time. Once the federal government gets ahold of a program, there creeps in tons of fraud and abuse. America’s debt is now great than 100% of our GDP — and there is no end in sight, but it will end. Unfortunately, I believe the entire world is in for some extremely difficult times in the very near future: once America melts down economically, the entire world will follow. The connection with federal health care is simple: it’s a great idea, but America cannot afford it. So, you do what you can, which is make charitable contributions and volunteer your time as you feel called to do.

  3. Dolan is risking the health of our nation. We need national health care. Shame on you, Dolan.

    • Jim says:

Where is that in the cxnstxtution, Anna, that the federal government is authorized to steal money from some Americans and give it to others? In fact, the amendments (the tenth amendment) specifically say that if a power has not be enumerated as belonging to the federal government, by definition it does not have it. If you are so strongly in favor of free health care, I hope you are volunteering your time in a health care setting. Liberals are forever in favor of the morality of picking the pockets of other Americans, but I don’t see liberals making much of a personal effort to deliver the care for free that they insist everyone deserves.

      • Jim says:

And BTW, Anna, that’s “Cardinal” Dolan. No respect for male headship?

        • blag says:

You consistently leave off the “president” label when talking about Obama, and yet you are whining about somebody else not doing it for a cardinal? Careful Jim, your hypocrisy is showing.

          • Jim says:

Blag — I will pay much more respect any day to a man chosen by God Himself to lead His Church than I will to a secular president, especially Obama, the most irresponsible president in the history of the USA, an one who twice voted against legislation in the IL senate to require health care professionals to suppot the life of babies that survived saline abortions. If you want the refernce to that, here it is: google.com.

            • Anita says:

Thank you Jim, for stating it so nicely. I agree wholeheartedly with you. Amen Amen.

              • Jim says:

Thanks, Anita. It would be nice if you’d stick around — there are a bunch of heretical, CINO posters here. They don’t offer any compelling evidence for their positions, but nonetheless there are so many of them, and some of them are quite persistent (do you think I’m thinking about you here, Tony?), that it nevertheless requires time and work to respond with the truth to their errant, disobedient, prideful posts.

                • Tony says:

Hey I didn’t preach the heresy of the non validity of eastern Orthodoxordination or celebration of Eucharist.

                • blag says:

I like how you claim people are CINO’s when nobody that I have seen has identified themselves as conservative or liberal. You seem to attribute many things to people based on things they never said.

    • Ann says:

      So agree with Anna.

  4. Florian says:

Most interesting indeed it is that Mr. Romney has accepted the Cardinal’s invitation to the Al Smith dinner before he has accepted the nomination of his party as the “next president of the USA.”

Wonder what would happen if Mitt fails to get nominated when The Dark Horse of the Apocalypse appears at the convention . . .

  5. Jim says:

Perfect move, Cardinal Dolan. Checkmate for Obama.

    • joe says:

Tim is a funny guy love’s the spotlight and NY is a big stage. He is a great hope for the NY priests after the dismal years under Eagan. It would behove him to fix the debacle for NY priests before he tackles a National issue that many Catholics have trouble understanding.
