Clinton’s Vatican Ambassador, Five More Back Romney for President

Former U.S. ambassadors to the Vatican — including Boston’s former Democratic Mayor Ray Flynn — have banded together in support of Republican challenger Mitt Romney as they try to push religious freedom to the center of the presidential debate.

Romney will be “a faithful defender of life in all its seasons,” the six former ambassadors say in a letter outlining why they believe Roman Catholics should vote for the Mormon candidate.

“We are all called to advance the moral teachings of Christianity in the life of our country. Where the stakes are highest — in the defense of life, liberty, and human dignity — we have a duty to act that is greater and more urgent than allegiance to any political party,” they say.

The ambassadors include former Democratic Boston Mayor Ray Flynn who was appointed to the Holy See by President Bill Clinton. The others — all appointed by Republican presidents — are Frank Shakespeare, Tom Melady, Jim Nicholson, Francis Rooney, and Mary Ann Glendon. There is only one other living former ambassador, 96-year-old Clinton appointee Lindy Boggs.

In their letter, the ambassadors say that their concerns in the 2012 election “lie with fundamental rights, beginning with religious liberty.”

“While the current administration has brought our first freedom under direct assault by imposing government mandates that completely disregard religious conscience, Governor Romney believes that freedom to live one’s faith is essential to liberty and human fulfillment. And he has pledged himself to removing those federal mandates immediately,” they write.

“While the current administration has now put its weight on the side of those who propose to redefine the meaning of marriage itself, Governor Romney has stood firm in defending this sacred institution. In the White House, just as he did in the Massachusetts State House, he will defend the institution of marriage before the Congress, the courts, and the country. [more]

Some of our LDS (Mormon) friends believe that if elected, Mr Romney will also act to remove the federal mandate against the practice of polygamy. That move would certainly be consistent with the Mitt Romney being backed by the ex-Vatican ambassadors.

  2. Recovering Catholic says:

The Vatican is right on this one, and I’m so pleased that these former ambassadors have banded together in defense of religious freedom. Mitt Romney is indeed a good man with a Christ consciousness. It sickens me to see a small minority of people with their special interrests trying to move this Country to the far left.

I, Sir am quite happy with the Pope we already have… You sir, need to know that there are still Practising Catholics left in this world who are in obedience to the Catholic Church’s precepts. Our Church has always preached love, for God, for neighbour, for our enemies, and for the sinner but not the sin. Perhaps you should avail yourself of the Blessed Sacrament of Reconciliation.

  4. James Francis says:

It is a joy to see these former Ambassadors and a Democratic mayor backing Romney’s stance on Religious Freedm. May more Christians stand up and speak out wspecially in November at the polling booth.

    according to who Jim

    • Jim says:

Common sense, Joe. Father Mark’s agreement with MJF is ridiculous. For example, MJF said in his post (and remember, Father says “Amen” to MJF’s post) that the Vatican teaches exclusion — that is a complete, bold-faced, outrageous lie, pure and simple. He also asserts the Vatican teaches “hate not love.” So, if Father Mark is a Catholic priest, he most definitely is not in communion with Rome, and therefore is not a priest in good standing. Honestly, if you can’t see this, you have a problem.

  6. Fr. Mark, osb says:

    Amen, sir!

    • Jim says:

Well, Father Mark, I think you 12:50 P.M. post is all the evidence I need that you are not a Catholic priest; or if you are, you are not in good standing with the Church.

    • Catholic Lady says:

whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a millstone fastened round his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea….Fr. Mark, please consider that some who read these comments are not as learned as you..be more careful in what you say Amen to. (unless it is your desire to lead them down the slippery path to hell)

  7. Michael Joseph Francisconi says:

It is the Vatican who is forcing their specific very narrow interpretation of religious truth on the rest of us. The majority of Roman Catholics in the US and Europe who are of reproductive age are practicing birth control. There are both gay and lesbian Catholics. It is the Vatican that teaches exclusion and not inclusion; hate not love and sanctimony over compassion. We need a new Pope and a Vatican three, four, five and six.
