Cardinal enters Chick-fil-A fray
Chicago Cardinal Francis George stepped into the ring on the Chick-fil-A gay marriage controversy with a blog post criticizing Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s statement that the fast-food chain’s values “are not Chicago values.”
“Recent comments by those who administer our city seem to assume that the city government can decide for everyone what are the ‘values’ that must be held by citizens of Chicago,” George wrote on the Archdiocese of Chicago’s blog Sunday. “I was born and raised here, and my understanding of being a Chicagoan never included submitting my value system to the government for approval. Must those whose personal values do not conform to those of the government of the day move from the city?”
Last week, Ald. Proco “Joe” Moreno, 1st, announced he will block Chick-fil-A’s effort to build its second Chicago store in Logan Square because the chain’s top executive has made clear his opposition to gay marriage.
Archdiocese spokeswoman Colleen Dolan said George stands by his blog post on what she called “religious freedom” and said this isn’t the first time the cardinal has sounded off on the issue of gay marriage.
“He’s given many talks and has a lot to say on the freedom of religion and the freedom to be Catholic,” Dolan said. “He doesn’t say things frivolously.”
Of the 21/2 years the archdiocese has maintained a blog, Dolan said this post has gotten “by far the largest response we’ve seen — most of it overwhelmingly positive.”
An Emanuel spokeswoman declined to comment Wednesday on George’s remarks. [more]

Thanks Cardinal! You are right or speaking up regarding the loss of our family values in America which is sad.
Does the Cardinal represent the Catholic values of a majority of Chicago’s Catholic women who quietly eschew his “values” related to sexuality in general and contraception in particular?
The Cardinal may be “neighbor Francis,” as he described himself in his installation remarks 14 years ago, but he was, and is, not the standard by which Chicagoans or Americans set their values. Just listen to most any Chicago Catholic woman.
Indeed, Florian, you are right on target — the Cardinal is “not the standard by which Chicagoans or Americans set their values” — and this country, sooner rather than later, will reap the whirlwind.
Here we see the mayor Rahm Emanuel acting like a dictator and not a mayor for all the people. He legally cannot stop any business from opening because of their personal belief re: Marriage. Like Obama, his former bosss, he will attack religious beliefs for votes. The Gays have push the enevlope to far, it now will back fire on themselves. God bless this cardinal and all religions that hold to the sacredness of marriage between a man and a women.
Thank goodness we have a Cardinal who is not pusillanimous — we need more courageous men on the front lines of this culture war.
I’m glad to be able to say something nice about our hierarchy! Good for you, Cardinal
I’m glad to see a post from you, Eileen — I thought we had lost you!
The culture wars are really heating up, and proving that they are not for chickens.
