Rabbi Challenges the Catholic Church
Rarely do heads of religious institutions engage in heated arguments these days in America. We have come to expect a certain level of neutrality, some objectivity and a careful amount of diplomacy in all situations. We look to our faith leaders to demonstrate the highest level of respect for one another, and model the behavior we are all taught to show for one another in our country, which is such a unique example of a religiously free democracy.
Usually that happens. Not always.
In a rare display of public concern for the religious freedom of American Roman Catholic women and possibly all Roman Catholic women, an American Jewish rabbi called for change within the Catholic Church. In response to the harsh treatment of our American Roman Catholic nuns, Rabbi Arthur Waskow, Ph.D., founder of the earth-loving, justice- seeking, peace-promoting Shalom Center in Philadelphia, wrote a Shalom Center Report Letter initially intended for his community, criticizing the Roman Catholic leadership for its harsh treatment of our nuns , whom he holds up as champions of social justice. And why should I care what a rabbi says when he is wearing a rainbow kippah?
There are may dedicated nuns performing the Lord’s work. God bless them for all they do.
But I have met a few wacky ones that seem to be wondering in the wilderness in search of a mission. Unfortunately these lost souls have latched onto popular but loser and ill conceived causes. I think of them as gullible victims of populist propaganda. They don’t see the political position or greedy guile of those pushing the propaganda. I pray for them, as I pray for those who have fallen away from the Truth, who have succumbed to the Evil One, as well as any who been hurt is some way by the Church itself and cannot find forgiveness in their hearts.
You don’t know much about Orthodox Judaism do you, recovering Catholic?
As an employer they have a fundamental moral obligation to provide certain basic benefits to their employees. This of course includes affordable health insurance. Any good insurance provides birth control and this is not nor should not be an option. If this is a hospital or a health center then they are of course providing a public service and such they ethically have no choice but to provide contraceptives to the public that they serve. Employment and public service is a social responsibility and religious conviction a personal choice.
One benefit we all should hae is to not have the building in which we work bombed. That right to life and security trumps what you are talking about, Michael. That wasn’t nice what your buddy Bill did — and he has specifically said he has no regrets about the bombings.
Thank you Rabbi Waskow and Eliza Wood and Gail. I agree will all of you
There is a big problem with battered wives and child abuse among the Hasidic. I hope the Rabbi speaks to those issues.
Let’s not change the subject, Anthony.
As a Catholic I would like to challenge the Babbi to speak to Jewish needs as he is challenging our bishops about our Sisters.
I would like to encourage Rabbi Waskow to stand up for the rights of Palestinian Christians and secular Jews within Israel.
We love our nuns!!I was educated by Presentation and Dominicans and have cousins who are Ursline and Sisters of Charaty. Nuns overwhelmingly support the teachings of the Catholic Church.Issues important to our nuns like Liberation Theology,Social Teachings of the Catholic Church are directed toward the poor and has the widespread support of the Catholic Church.High on the list of concerns of the Church is Human Rights. Killing innocent Human Beings (abortion) is a Human Rights violation more horrible than the Holacaust , slavery or the denial of basic rights to women.Sexual promiscuity encouraged by contraception is a major source of abortion. The Catholic Church and the Nuns support family planning in stable marraiges…A lot of thought involving debate among Catholic intellectuals who are Bishops (with very practical experience) , thousands of Catholic Universities, and Religous Orders goes into Magesterium of Papal Letters. Central intellectual authority is an important strength of the Catholic Church. My Rabbi friends tell me that ” many Rabbis wish there was a captain for their rudderless ship”. Jesus said that before we seek to remove the speck from our neighbors eye, we should remove the plank from your own eye. The Rabbi commentator would do well to examine the relationship of Orthodox Jews, and others denominations, toward women , and thank God that he doesn’t have to deal with the young Bishops , Jesuits and Friars who are experts and who guide Catholic theology. His simplistic advice would not last long in the Theological Square.
Raymond — no need for hormonal contraception in stable marriages — the data show that NFP is actually equally effective with oral contraception — but, it requires the couple to abstain for up to ten days per cycle. Abstinence would be good for the couple’s virtue.
So what?
There are some good men in the world who aren’t control freaks; they’re Jewish.
Shalom, R. C.
