About the author

Marcel Guarnizo of Saint John Neumann Catholic Church in Gaithersburg speaks to protestors Monday morning during a rally against Dr. LeRoy Carhart's abortion clinic in Germantown.

Remember Father Marcel Guarnizo, the black-caped Catholic priest who denied a lesbian communion at her mother’s funeral in Gaithersburg in February? Guarnizo became a lightning rod for both sides after that incident; some saw him as a hero of orthodoxy while others found his behavior cruel and un-Catholic.

Guarnizo, who grew up in Northern Virginia but became a priest in the archdiocese of Moscow, Russia, was placed on administrative leave in March by the Washington archdiocese, where he was assigned on a temporary basis. His pastor at St. John Neumann parish and archdiocese officials said at the time that he wasn’t being removed because of the communion controversy but because he engaged “in intimidating behavior toward parish staff and others that is incompatible with proper priestly ministry.”

The archdiocese now confirms that Guarnizo is “no longer in ministry in the Archdiocese of Washington,” according to a spokeswoman. [more]

  1. Mary says:

Of course the media will exploit this news. Fr. Guarnizo did, in my opinion, what he needed to do when he denied communion. The lesbian in question politicized the incident and the Archdiocese of Washington regrettably did not support him.

  2. joe says:

I am very happy to hear he is no longer in in active ministry maybe a cloistered environment would be better suited for him

    • Jim says:

Why, Joe? Do you have a problem with him denying Holy Communion to a lesbian? I think it’s fantastic that he did that; he provides real leadership to the laity in doing so.

      • joe says:

I think the article addressed in appropriate behavoir to Parish staff as the reason for his silencing. the church has played this game for years with politicians and Abortion, divorcees, ex priests and religious married. God’s a much better judge

        • Jim says:

God is the best judge, Joe — and, before He ascended into Heaven, He delegated to the Church the power to bind and loose sins. Do you have a problem with the God-Man’s delegation, and the rightful authority of the Church Magisterium?

  3. Carl says:

Michael…were you talking about Jim, our resident orthodoctor? Mmmm.

  4. Michael Joseph Francisconi says:

    Jim
He is a coward, a fool and a bigot

    • Jim says:

Wow, thanks Michael for you incisive reasoning and offering the evidence to support your position. I could have a computer post as intelligently as you: everytime you press the right button, it issues a comment like yours. If you are homosexual, Michael, I still love you — but it’s time to face the truth about what is holy and righteous.

    • Jim says:

And, Michael, with regard to being a bigot: not at all true. He is simply correctly distinguishing proper sexual behavior from immoral sexual behavior. Do you have a problem with what God has said about homosexual sex? It is you who are the bigot — you attack a priest for doing the right thing. I’m sure your gay lover will understand, though — to talk to him.

    • Jim says:

Wow — I did a Google search of your very distinguishable name. Are you the same Michel Joseph Francisconi who supports Bill Ayers? If so, may everyone who comes to this site know that. Indeed, I will make sure they do know it — I’ll watch for all of your posts, then attach a disclaimer to them letting others know your political beliefs. If you are the same person, understand this: YOU ARE UNAMERICAN AND A CREEP. GO BLOW YOURSELF UP WITH DYNAMITE.

      • Carl says:

Hey, orthodoctor Jim, you really are a Nazi, aren’t you? Intolerant, nasty, judgmental….Hey, just kidding. I kid Jim a lot. I’ll bet hehas a little holocaust oven in his back yard. Just kidding, Jim. Keep at it, Jim-bo. Maybe the stress will kill you. Just kidding.

        • Jim says:

:-) Carl — but here’s the deal — I have no idea what the real intent of your post is. But nevertheless, it did make me laugh. Hard to believe I can laugh, huh? I must tell you, besides evangelizing, I enjoy this website. I feel like I’m taking batting practice. No one here can really throw the ball hard, and everyone — even the doctors such as Michael Joseph Franciscone and Sarah Dolan — are real easy to hit. They throw 65 MPH fast balls right over the plate, or they throw the ball over the catcher’s head.

          • Jim says:

Americans, including these academic pseudo-doctors, are pretty incompetent. There is not much hope for this country — we are grossly indulged and thus spoiled.

    • Jim says:

May all who come here know that Michael Joseph Francisconi supports Bill Ayers the terrorist!

    • Jim says:

Hey, “Dr.” (and I use that designation loosely) Francisconi — why don’t you go get a job teaching in Saudi Arabia? You’d fit right in there.

    • Jim says:

Michael (I won’t call you doctor anymore than I’d call the physicians who worked for the Nazis doctors) — it is creeps like you with your ultra-liberal ideology who are destroying this generation of students with the garbage you spew. The students you teach will profit the most if you go to class and read the Wall Street Journal to them. Or, how about showing them some Catholic videos — for example, of canonized saints whose bodies never have decomposed? Every time you open your mouth in front of your students, you hurt your students. You are dispicable, disgusting, and treasonous.

  5. Jim says:

Well, denying Holy Communion to a lesbian probably was the right thing to do, and certainly very courageous. We need more priests like Father Guarnizo — priests with courage.
