Chaput reacts to Pope’s planned trip to Philly
Archbishop Charles Chaput has just returned home after Pope Benedict the XVI announced that the 2015 World Meeting of Families will be held in Philadelphia.
Chaput was in Milan, where the Pope made the announcement over the weekend. As it turns out, Chaput found out a month ago but managed to keep the secret, telling just a few trusted advisors.
Chaput said he has no idea why Philadelphia was chosen.
“People have asked me that, about the motivation of the pope for choosing Philadelphia and any answer I give would be simply guessing,” he said. “Your guess is as good as mine.”
The Archbishop says he was reluctant at first considering the Archdiocese’s desperate financial condition. But, he says, they’ll get help from private donors.
“It’s going to cost us something up front but, hopefully, not very much. Hopefully we’ll get into the fundraising soon and that will cover the costs,” said Chaput.
In 1979, a million people crowded the Parkway to see Pope John Paul II. Archbishop Chaput says he wouldn’t be surprised if a similar crowd came out to see Pope Benedict XVI.
The conference is expected to last about five days with the pope coming in for the closing benediction.
It’s expected to be a financial boost for the city and a spiritual boost for Catholics in the Archdiocese. Over the past few years, they’ve been battered with bad news from the sex scandal to school and parish closings.
“This was certainly was an unexpected gift, and I know it’s from God, and it will be a great blessing for us,” Chaput said.
Pope Benedict will be 88 years old in 2015. However, Archbishop Chaput says the pope appears to be in great physical shape and he fully expects him to be here.

Well, Tony, then please cut out your offensive and continual negativity. And, I do not believe you accept Humane Vitae; I believe you are a cafeteria Catholic with you as your own pope.
I actually think that Tony is a troll – he never, ever has anything good to say.
Thanks for your observation, Mary. Tony is indeed a negative force, definitely not on the side of good.
What a wonderful blessing for Philadelphia. As a member of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia I am so proud of our new Archbishop and I’m happy to receive some good news!
As a Catholic physician who has met many who have been sexually abused by priests, I ask why has Pope Benedict XVI not admitted to his role in allowing the sexual abuse of innocent children by priests to flourish worldwide from the 24 years that he was the head of the office that dealt with priest sexual abuse cases, and since 2005 as Pope?
And you, Dr. McHugh, have done extensive research into what Pope Benedict has done in this regard? I doubt it — most physicians I know don’t even read medical journals because of the lack of time, let alone to follow up on something like this. May I recommend you not make assumptions unless you have some hard evidence to support your suppositions?
Chaput is bitting at the bit for the red hat……money is no object.
Tony, you are enormously cynical. I hope you don’t identify yourself as Catholic. If you do, I have news for you: you are not. You’ve started your own church, and you are its head.
I beleive and profess the doctrines and dogma of the church but I don’t want to kneel down and kiss the butt of guys like Chaput and Burke. That Jim doesn’t disqualify me from being in commuinon with the Catholic community of faith.
So, Tony, do you then accept Humane Vitae as valid? I’ll be interested in your response to that.
And, since by its fruit you will know it, and since Archbishop Chaput and Bishop Burke have produced much good fruit, I am left with the only logical conclusion about people like you who don’t like good fruit: that you are bad fruit.
I will not reduce this board to responding to personal attacks.
Okay, then how about if you quit your offense comments? And BTW, I seriously doubt you accept Humane Vitae — I believe you are a cafeteria Catholic, with you as your own pope.
You know, Tony, it just occurred to me, the irony of what you said: you sit there and constantly personally attack the Catholic hierarchy, like the very Godly Archbishop Chaput — and then all of a sudden you turn thin-skinned when it comes to yourself, not being willing to respond to “personal attacks.” Get with it Tony — but then again, I do remember you’re not much of a man, as you shirk your duties as a man to provide leadership for the women.
