Tribute to legendary American mission priest
Redemptorist priest Fr Larry Patin died in January 2011 after a lifetime working in Southeast Asia with street children, lepers, Aids orphans, the elderly, and refugees. Born in rural Michigan, Fr Larry was sent to the region during the Vietnam War and became fluent in Thai, Lao and Vietnamese among other languages. His work included building, growing food and cooking, as well as nursing and performing emergency surgical operations – in addition to his priestly duties.
A self-effacing man with a wry sense of humour, Fr Larry gave a rare interview to the Thai Children’s Trust a few months before his final illness, in which he recalls his early life and work.
